Objectives
The objective of the course is to get students acquainted with management in transition countries, especially in Central and Eastern Europe and Asia. Students will gain insight into and understanding of what the great transformations of these countries in the last quarter of the 20th century have brought about in the areas of economy, industry, business and management. These historic events have had a great impact on the Western world as well, not in the least on businesses and international management.
Contents

In this course, students will become acquainted with business and management in transition countries, especially in Central and Eastern European and Asian countries (mainly China). The course aims at providing insight into and understanding of what the great transformations in these countries have brought about during the last quarter of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century. The effects of the transformations on the economy, industry, business and management in these countries are discussed. The historic events have had a great impact on the Western world as well, and in this course we will discuss the effects of the transformations on Western business and management.

The main focus of the course is on the radically changed climate for business and management, i.e. from planned to market economies. The first lectures discuss the situation regarding economy, business and management until 1989. Next, the various types of reforms and developments in economy and enterprises and the consequences for management are highlighted. Insight is provided into the different characters and forms of developed enterprises and the new business strategies.  A last viewpoint comes from a Western perspective and involves the opportunities and challenges for Western business in terms of entry strategies for marketing, production, trade, cooperation and labour.
